Sisters of the Dark Cypress: Ghost Trail Story
A dark tale of Sidney Calhoun, the Sisters of the Dark Cypress, and the cursed estate grounds of Locust Fork.
Background: I was the storyteller for a Halloween haunted trails attraction at River Hills Retreat. Guests were brought into a dark scary room where I sat in a large chair and told the story to guests sitting by the fireplace. I brought in elements of the trail: witches, a mad scientist lab in a gazebo near the river, and the cemetery walk at the end of the trail. Sadly, this was the last year we did Halloween events at the property.
Thank you for visiting our home and estate property this evening. On your tour of the grounds, you will encounter some disturbing sights so I feel, as your host, obliged to explain their story.
Bad luck followed Sidney Calhoun wherever he went. He was a tall, strong farmer who lived in the foothills of Kentucky, but the soil was rocky and weak and the only thing that grew were his debts. When the War of 1812 broke out, he snuck off at night with his rifle and a few possessions and joined up with the volunteers marching to Louisiana to fight the British invaders.
During the Battle of New Orleans, his company guarded the right flank between the edge of a protective wall and the swamp. As the fighting intensified, he felt the burn of a bullet under his right shoulder then one to the stomach and he crumbled down to his back. When the enemy briefly took the ground, a British private plunged a bayonet into his chest but missed his heart.
The next morning he faded in and out of consciousness. He awoke to the kindest face, a beautiful young woman wearing a cloak covered with exotic symbols, her neck and hands covered with strange amulets, rings, and charms. She poured a strong-smelling liquid on his forehead and placed some plants in his wounds. Several women carried Sidney to a flatboat and they disappeared into the foggy depths of the Cajun swamp.
For many months, Kahlina Archambeau used her potions and enchantments to nurse him back to health. Their coven, the Sisters of the Dark Cypress, were not your storybook cackling witches. They were healers, midwives, and keepers of ancient knowledge, drawing energy from the life-filled swamp to connect to the spiritual realm.
A local doctor and preacher turned the local people against the Sisters of the Dark Cypress so they moved here and Sidney began to farm the land. Kahlina and the Sisters loved the secluded beauty of rolling hills and the free-flowing waters of the Locust Fork, believing the river’s energy would sustain their connection to the spiritual realm.
However, the Sisters’ arrival disrupted the delicate balance of the land. The spirits of the river, accustomed to peace, were angered by the potent working of the witches’ magic.
Their rituals became tainted by the river’s growing hostility. Each spell cast further fueled the growing darkness. The land itself began to absorb this corrupted magic.
Sidney’s farm began to fail. The Sisters tried spells to enrich the land’s fertility but the result was grotesque vegetation.
People came from the surrounding communities for healing potions and good luck charms but their protective charms turned into curses, and their healing potions caused illness and madness.
Sidney became an angry violent man and endangered his neighbors. One cool October night, under the light of a full moon, the local citizens came here, killed Sidney and the Sisters, and buried them in the old cemetery on the hill. But the evil curse never lifted from the land.
In the early 1900’s, a local well-respected physician, Dr. Thaddeus Thorne, built this house but tragedy soon followed. His wife and children suffered long, painful deaths with symptoms he’d never seen before in his practice and his studies. He grew desperate and angry as he could not soothe their suffering or save their lives.
Dr. Thorne, ensnared by the insidious influence of the cursed land, descended into madness. His once noble pursuit of healing transformed into an unholy obsession with conquering death. He established a hidden laboratory in the woods near the river, where he conducts gruesome experiments with the hope of bringing his wife and children back to life. The results of his failures are abominations of nature that roam the land, neither alive nor quite dead, and certainly not at peace.
The trail rises to the gates of an ancient cemetery where rows of moonlit headstones casting skeletal shadows surround the grand mausoleum that houses the restless spirits.
But there is a way to appease the tormented souls and guarantee your safe passage. Respectfully receive the flowers offered by the gravedigger and lay them upon the graves – a simple token of respect and peace to those trapped between worlds will momentarily soothe their anger and will allow you safe departure.
Of course, the memory of your brush with the afterlife will remain, a haunting reminder of the darkness that always lies hidden beneath the surface and just inside the shadows of our world.
Thank you for listening to this sad tale. Please follow the path past the funeral parlor, where an assistant will guide you to the grounds tour.
